History of the University of Connecticut
When the University of Connecticut was established in 1881, it was known as the Storrs Agricultural School, named in honor of the brothers Charles and Augustus Storrs, who had purchased the land and provided financial support for the institution. Female students began attending classes in 1891, and the school officially admitted women in 1893. That same year, it was renamed Storrs Agricultural College and designated as Connecticut's land-grant university. The institution was subsequently renamed Connecticut Agricultural College in 1899, Connecticut State College in 1933, and finally the University of Connecticut in 1939—a name it retains to this day.
