In 1933, the school expanded its curriculum and added the fashion illustration major. In 1936, the Academy of Art was added.

Richard A. Stephens, the son of Richard S. Stephens, took over the school after graduating from Stanford University in 1951. During his tenure, he increased the enrollment from 50 students to 5,200. He also established the foundation department to offer basic courses and teach the fundamental principles of art and design. In 1966, the school established the School of Art, and in the same year, the US Department of Education approved the awarding of a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree to students. In 1977, the number of Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees was increased. In 1983, California approved the establishment of master's programs. Richard A. Stephens' daughter, Eliza Stephens, took over the school in 1992.
